Volunteer Corner: Andy Palon

Volunteer Corner
Andy Palon
Walking Scorer Co-Chairman
How long have you volunteered for The ACE Group Classic?
I have volunteered for a total of 21 years.
What volunteer committees have you worked on for the ACE Group Classic?
I worked on the Media committee for two years and the rest of the years as a walking scorer.
What are your responsibilities for this year's Tournament?
I am the co-chairman of the walking scorers.
Can you name some of the benefits of being a volunteer chairman?
It's a lot of fun, sometimes challenging. However, the rewards far outweigh the challenges we sometimes have to face. Pam [Co-Chairman] and I make a great team and are usually referred to as "the dynamic duo."
Who are your favorite players to watch on the Champions Tour circuit?
Peter Jacobsen and Ben Crenshaw are my favorite.
From your experience, what is something interesting about the Champions Tour?
I love the pro-am experience! The guys are so loose and spend so much time giving lessons to the amateurs. They spend so much time with their guests they sometimes don't even get to finish their rounds by the time the horn blows.
Would you encourage other Naples residents to come out? Why?
Definitely! It's the ultimate golf experience.
What souvenirs have you collected over the years volunteering at The ACE Group Classic?
I have lots of signed golf balls. I have a signed golf glove from Tom Watson and a signed 18th green flag from Mark James the year he won and I scored for him. I also have a signed copy of the scorecard when "Mr. 59," Al Geiberger shot that infamous 59. One of my best memories is of Vicente Fernandez, the year he won and all his kids and wife ran onto the green, all of them crying, including Vicente and me!
