“We are very happy to have Lee back in our field. He is a golf icon and someone that still commands huge galleries everywhere that he goes,” said Tournament Director Jason Camp. “He plays a very limited schedule now and to be included in his plans is a testament to the strength of our event and the hospitality of the fans. I hope everyone will come and support him in one of the only opportunities this year to see him playing competitive golf.”
Trevino, a 1981 inductee to the World Golf Hall of Fame, is a familiar face to most golf fans and always a crowd pleaser. Throughout his illustrious career, Trevino has amassed 29 PGA TOUR victories and 29 Champions Tour victories. He captured two U.S. Opens, two PGA Championships and two British Open titles during his PGA TOUR career.
Trevino won back-to-back titles in Naples in 1990 and 1991. In 1990, he set a then-tournament record score of 200 to hold off Bruce Crampton by one stroke. The following year, he became the first player in tournament history to successfully repeat as champion by outlasting Dale Douglass by one stroke.
The 5-foot-7 ball of fire is best known for his quick wit that makes players and galleries laugh while commanding their respect at the same time. A natural performer, but also a hard worker, Trevino is arguably the most consistent shotmaker the game has ever seen.
Trevino only participated in four official events in 2008. He was troubled by a bad right knee that required surgery for torn cartilage in October. Trevino has also been hampered by lower back problems throughout his career, some of which can attributed to being struck by lightning during play in the 1975 Western Open.
